Yochai
Avrahami and Yoav Miller
Yochai Avrahami and Yoav Miller construct industrial-like objects
in light materials such as plywood, plastic and paint. A "compressor
container", "an excavator arm and shovel," and a "crane driver's
cabin" are familiar objects that are transformed through their construction
in a material that is, by its very nature, weak and frugal. The
choice of industrial objects produced serially as models for sculptures
attests to an interest in the mundane and banal. The presented parts,
however, are function-less, since they were detached from the machines
to which they are habitually connected (compressor, tractor, and
crane). In the work of these artists as well, there is much room
for painting that simulates the surface of the object to a real,
concrete material; this is, however, not an image of the original
material, but rather a natural material such as bone. The two artists
have been working together since 1999. Their recent exhibition was
entitled Shablarists (a Hebrew acronym standing for Illegal Use
of Vehicle - police jargon for people engaging in car theft and
dismantling, usually for purposes of trade in spare parts). |
